Sustainable communities and landscapes

Reem is  a Post-doctoral Researcher in the Department of Wood Science at UBC. Her research and teaching interests focus on community-based forest management as a tool for poverty alleviation and promoting sustainable landscapes. In recent work she looked at power imbalances, challenges communities face in managing their forests and maintaining forest-based enterprises, and bottom-up approaches to community forestry initiatives in developing countries. She also has a keen interest in promoting community forestry as part of national REDD+ strategies, and community and smallholder forest certification. For more information visit her website,

Within the AdapTree project, she is part of the socio-economics team looking at the range of acceptable human interventions in forested ecosystems.
